what means "select by midi"

I use Komplete 13 and I have Kontakt 7

on the new presentation of beats instrument what does the selection "select by midi" mean and what is its used for ?

with this same instrument, on a Groove 3 demo it seems possible to select in solo each of the 16 pads and modify the sound but I can't do it. I can only modify the all patch
