Upward compression + Downward compression = Riding the fader?

I have a question for seasoned mix and master engineers.

the combination of this two techniques of compression, are the same as riding the fader?

downward compression reduces the high volume signals

upwards compression rises the lower volume signals

basically what I try to do when I ride the fader manually, right? or am I wrong?
