Did you quit and start again? I'm on a M1 Mac and I noticed that when the firmware started updating, MacOS asked if I wanted to connect to the keyboard. I didn't see the dialog box and the firmware updater app asked me to start again. When I said yes to connect my keyboard to the OS, the firmware updater worked as expected.
