0dBU matching -18dBFS is just an EBU recommendation, not all equipment is calibrated like that. But if we consider that Maschine might theoretically conform to EBU calibration guidelines, this would sort of check out in Maschine's case. And given the line input's headroom on the analogue side, this is very close to reality

But the way I have understood it, digital level scale is always relative, and the designers of the digital system can freely decide how to calibrate their IO to correspond with analogue audio levels. You could design a system where reaching -18dBFS on the digital side requires +6dBU, or +20dBU, or anything in between. Digital audio levels and analogue audio levels never have a global 1:1 relationship, it always "depends" on the system, and systems are always designed with some sort of specific use cases in mind (is it meant to be used with consumer audio products? Or only with Pro Audio equipment? Or perhaps a one-size-fits-all point in the middle? etc)

    just an EBU recommendation

.....as it clearly states at the bottom of the picture I posted, and my post did not suggest otherwise.

I’m recommending everyone add a small mixer to their setup. Solves all these problems and more.
