Headphone distortion cueing

HI all, running Traktor S2 MK3 MIDI mapped on DJ Pro software. Have connected the controller to computer also bus powered with a USB-C adaptor. Monitor speakers are AIAIAI Unit 4 wireless+ that are running out of MacBook [selected as main output for deck 1 and deck 2 in the DJ Pro software]. Headphones giving me terrible feedback and distorted, broken, choppy noise when cueing, when the speakers are also connected. I can't find answers online; submitted a ticket to NI but wondering if community has any ideas for possible troubleshooting? Have tried other headphones and that doesn't seem to fix. Thank you!

I think there might be something wrong with your audio settings in traktor.

Can you share a screenshots of [Audio setup] and [Output routing] in the settings?

Make sure you are running internal mixing mode. Both headphones and speakers need to be connected to the same audio interface (for example the s2) or you need to create an aggregated audio device.

Not a direct answer but feedback tells us the headphone signal is somehow feeding back into the mixer or something which in turn sends the signal right back into the headphones. It's possible the feedback is suppose to be there but it phase has shifted into positive feedback instead of negative feedback. In reality most design don't feedback the headphone signal for damping or what not. Maybe you have a live microphone picking up the headphones or something. That'll do it if the gain is too high. Can you attenuate your headphone level?

@lord-carlos bingo, thank you! Switched to internal and swapped the headphones into MacBook headphone jack [the monitor speakers are routed through the computer so I tried as you said to connect to same audio interface, since the adaptor for speakers doesn't plug directly (via usb-c) into the s2] and it cleaned the sound up instantly. Really appreciate the help!
