I'm a total newb to the Maschine ecosystem.

In controller mode for the Maschine+, does audio have to come from the computer via an audio interface, or is there a way to see the work being done on the computer but still have audio coming from the hardware unit? Thanks in advance for your help and answers!

Yup, and all you need to do is set the MK3 as the audio device in the Maschine preferences.
