Maschine MK3 + Arturia Microfreak

Hello,

This is actually a question about how Maschine works with any hardware synth, but I happen to have a Microfreak and to encounter some issues. If you have more experience with syncing Maschine with hardware synth, maybe you can help.

The thing is: when I play the Microfreak using the MK3 beyboard, the sound of Microfreak seems perfect. But when I try to record it in Maschine 2, the recording messes up all midi notes coming from Microfreak: they sound as if I would twist all Microfreak's knobs constantly. And the same thing happens if I try to record the midi notes in Maschine 2, playing them directly from the Microfreak's keyboard.

My setup is: Microfreak and MK3 connected to computer via midi plugins; Microfreak's audio output going into MK3's Line In 1 and into my audio interface.

If you can possibly help with an advice, I'd highly appreciate it.

I wonder if this is due to the fact that the Microfreak keyboard is poly aftertouch/MPE, neither of which are supported by Maschine?

I wouldn’t rely on Maschine for this, use a DAW that supports MPE (Bitwig is what I use)

When you say "Microfreak and MK3 connected to computer via midi plugins" what exactly do you mean? Are you talking about MIDI over USB, or MIDI DIN into some sort of audio interface?

It would help too if you could post a sample of each. A) Microfreak played from MK3, B) Microfreak played from Microfreak.

Do you have the midi clock turned on from the Maschine? That messes with my roland JU-06A. Using USB.

So are you recording the audio from your Microfreak, or the midi notes from it in your Maschine MK3? Or are you just trying to record MIDI notes and send them back out to the Microfreak?

I did a quick test with the Maschine software using the Microfreak as a MIDI controller and playing the MiniFreak VST and it sounded fine to me.

The Midi Sync on Maschine MK3 is set on Send Clock.

I want to record the midi notes from MicroFreak in Maschine. But once I press record and I play (let's say) a Microfreak preset by using the MK3 pads, the notes are instantly messed up (they sound like I would change modulation all the time).

Unfortunately I can't send a video.

Oh I solved it. I think it was the clock, because after turning on the midi clock on Maschine, I changed the bpm in Maschine 2. Thanks for the tip.

Could you also help me with a question about recording MicroFreak + Maschine in Logic Pro?

You will still have a problem capturing any of the aftertouch or MPE information in Maschine, it’s probably impossible to play a Microfreak without creating some form of polyphonic expression, all you will get is notes

Thanks for the advice. I guess I will use Maschine as a tool for hitting the right notes/modes/chords in Microfreak, until I'll have the knowledge to do more.

But as a difference from Maschine 2, in Logic Pro, the problem is that the DAW does not record any midi at all, if Microfreak is played from the Maschine MK3's pads. Even though there is signal in the midi channel when I'm playing (pic attached).

The audio, instead, is recorded in Logic Pro without issues. Is that because I have an audio connection between MK3 and Microfreak, but not a midi connection between them? Only their separate midi connection to the computer?

Hello again.

Apparently, even with a MIDI connection between MK3 & MicroFreak, no DAW is able to record the midi from MicroFreak, controlled by Maschine mk3 (Maschine: source - MicroFrea: midware - Logic or Ableton: destination).

It seems just impossible. So, I have to record simultaneously: the midi in Maschine 2 and the audio in the DAW.

Although the midi signal is received by the DAW, it is unable to record it.
