Should a Maschine unit light up when plugged in to a laptop???

yes, if it´s powered you should see a short sequence of lights going on. But maybe it gets not enough power, try to use another cable and no hubs for example.
Ah, depends what Maschine version. MK3 I believe is USB powered but Maschine Studio for instance, you need a power supply, USB alone won’t power it so confirm what version you have and if it needs the power supply.
