Exploit aliasing to get sci-fi sounds in Kontakt

Create sci-fi sounds and noises in Kontakt by exploiting aliasing of Lo-Fi quality Wavetable source.

  1. In Kontakt Edit Mode, create a Group containing a sine wavetable. You can use factory wavetable Sin-Square.wav. Set quality to Best.
  2. Duplicate the Group. Disable 'Edit All Groups', and change Wavetable source quality of the second group to Lo-Fi.
  3. Enable 'Edit All Groups'. Add Invert effect to Group FX.
  4. Disable 'Edit All Groups' and enable 'Phase Invert' only in the second group. Now the pure sine sounds of the two groups will cancel each other, and only the aliasing artifacts and other noise/distortion will pass through to output.
  5. Enable 'Edit All Groups' again and add two 'SV HP6' filters to both groups. Set Cutoff to about 950Hz, and add Key Position modulator to Cutoff using 'SVF & Ladder Keytrack' modulation shaper preset. All filters using the same settings. Those will attenuate the remaining fundamental tone.
  6. You may need to increase volume to get the noises more clearly audible. For example, increase Output to 24dB in both Invert effects.
  7. To get interesting sounds try pitch-bend and different wavetable Form modes as well as wavetable Inharmonic amounts. Decrease pitch modulation intensity to something like 0.5 st to get finer control on pitch-wheel. Assign modwheel (MIDI CC 1) to wavetable Form.
  8. Use high LAG values, something like 1000-4999, in Pitch and Form modulators to get nice smooth noise sweeps.
  9. Add Ladder LP3 filter in High Quality mode to cut harsh high frequencies. Add Tape Saturation to add some warm character. In Main FX, add Transparent Limiter to the end of FX chain to keep final output levels in safe range. Add Supercharger GT for even more character and warmth. Experiment with Ring Modulator effect to get more sci-fi sounds. Also add Replica delay and Raum reverb to create huge space effect.
  10. Go crazy by adding MPE script to control Tune, Form and Inharmonic amounts polyphonically from MPE contoller's Pitch, Slide and Pressure expressions.
