Kontrol S88 MK3 midi controller hardware connection

I would like to purchase the S88 MK3 midi controller but I have no USB-C ports left open on my iMac and I am not very technically literate. The NI website says: "if you do not have a USB-C port you can use your own 1) adapter and 2) power supply"

1) Adapter - I have a cable that has a USB-C connector at one end and a USB-A connector at the other. Will this do to connect from the USB-C Host slot on the keyboard to an open USB-A port on my Mac?

2) Not sure what they mean by "power supply". I am assuming they mean something that runs from the port on the back of the keyboard that has "lightning bolt image" and the word "Only" over it... to a wall socket. The connector on the keyboard does not look familiar at all. Does anyone know a specific product name I can just buy or have a video of someone doing this?

It's pretty simple, if you think about it. There's one USB-C slot for data + power and one USB-C slot for power only. If your computer delivers enough power, then you might just use the data+power slot, if not, you will have to attach another USB-C cable powered by a power supply / wall socket.

It should, providing like mentioned the port has enough power capability, with some macs that could be an issue tho and these keyboards can be power hungry with all the LEDs and that large screen.

Rather than having to get a power adapter specifically to have to power the keyboard now you can use ANY USB-C power adapter to power the keyboard while also having it connected to the PC. This also makes it easier to use the keyboard standalone without needing to invest in a power adapter since standalone mode only works when the data connection is not connected to a powered USB plug.

    Thanks mickeyl,

Good straight forward explanation. So I searched on USB-C cable and wall socket... and the first thing I came up with on Amazon was "Samsung 45W Fast Charging wall charger with USB-C cable".

So for power I will use that device into the power only port of the S88 and for data I will use my existing USB-C to USB-A cable into the USB-C Host port on the S88.

    Sound about right? Thanks again!

    Thanks JesterMgee,

I was assuming the cable I had for the USB-C to USB-A data connection was probably not going to be sufficent for power and I would need a power adapter. I am hoping the "Samsung 45W Fast Charging wall charger with USB-C cable" I found on Amazon (as mentioned in my previous respone to mickeyl) would fit your description of "ANY USB-C power adapter".

Should do. Obviously you can test and see if the mac will have the power available, if the mac had a USB C port it would likely be fine but USB A may not cover the requirement, not even sure what the power draw of hte KB is and too lazy to dig. Good thing is now tho, the power supply can be any USB C wall adapter (of decent quality).

I have been using the S88 Mk2 now for approximately 2 years ... and I loved it from the very start .. and still do, my question is, will the Mk3 be compatible with Cubase 12 PRO ( My choice of DAW ) 😏.. after seeing Guy Ms video it seems not .. so when will this awsum bit of kit be allowed in my studio

@SupaReels Cubase integration should come by the end of the year:

Thanks for the information, I always worry when support is late with such a large DAW ( Cubase 12 pro ) so I may wait a while before commitment to replacing my well loves S88 Mk2.

    All the best

    Steve
