Kontakt instances in VE Pro 7 orchestral template take ages to unload
Hello!
It's my first time writing here because I usually search the forums and find all the answers I need without having to ask :) But this time I'm stuck and I hope someone can shed some light or share their experience!
I have a Vienna Ensemble Pro orchestral template with around 50 instances of Kontakt 5.8.x in a single VEP7 instance (Spitfire Audio, Infinite Brass, Cinematic Studio series, etc.). Loading this 50Gb template takes some time but nothing unusual. I use it mainly with Dorico and it works perfectly fine on my Windows 10 PC with 64Gb of RAM and Intel i9 8-core CPU.
But alas! When comes the time to close VE Pro after a hard day of working, it takes ages for VE Pro to quit and for the RAM to be free again. Loading the template only takes a few minutes, but unloading it takes up to one hour, sometimes more. When I check the task manager I see the RAM curve lowering painfully slowly.
A few notes:
- It was already the case with VEP6 and my older CPU/motherboard configuration, but it's become unbearable with a full Kontakt template
- The behaviour is the same with various versions of Sibelius and Dorico
- My full Vienna Instrument orchestral template (~70-80 Vienna Instruments, no Kontakt instruments) loads and unloads like a charm
Has any of you experienced the same behaviour? Do you have any workaround? I hate to "force quit" software, especially audio software with iLock as I've encountered a few issues (e.g. iLock not recognized after force quit). I asked on Vienna forums too but they said memory allocation is a plugin level issue so there's nothing they can do.
Thanks a lot for your help!

Quite a strange answer, since Vienna Ensemble Pro is also a plugin.
But from what you say, I presume you are using it standalone and not inside a DAW. Correct?
Are you using it on a single computer or through Ethernet and its own server on multiple machines?
It happened to me to use it only several times in a professional studio and all those times it was with a setup far less complex and rich than yours, but I do remember it taking some time to process everything that was happening there, included some longer time to save instances at the end of the session (not so long as you refer, but longer than what I was used to with my “normal” work load)
So…I’m guessing if it isn’t normal for your very full project to need all this time

Hi!
Thank you for taking the time to reply, and sorry if my first post wasn't clear. Everything is on a single PC. I use VEP7 server mainly with Dorico (acting like a DAW), but I've seen the exact same behaviour with Cubase and Sibelius.
The thing is my VEP templates that are filled with non-Kontakt instruments only don't have the same issue and close in less than a minute. So that's why I came to the conclusion it must Kontakt, and thought maybe someone had encountered -- and hopefully solved -- the same issue.

The only thing I can think of as a difference is if your non Kontakt session has all the instruments “not active” while the Kontakt one is processing them all.
In any case you are right and probably you need someone with a fair complex setup like yours to help you and compare timings and differences
