I think it depends how you want to work. Personally I’m not all that bothered to have a weighted action keyboard. I use a Roland MIDI controller which is velocity sensitive but not weighted. I also have the miniature KORG keyboard just for bashing notes in. But as often as not I get MIDI data into Cubase by inputting it into notation software (I used to use Sibelius - now I use MuseScore) and then exporting to MIDI. To me this is far quicker than laboriously putting notes directly into Cubase, but then I’m composing and arranging in quite a traditional way. Once the MIDI data is in Cubase, I voice it up with my VSTi packages (Kontakt, Garritan, SampleTank and a number of Sonic Couture products) and manipulate the MIDI data by hand, note by note, until I get the musical performances I require. This is laborious and minute work, but it does get the desired effect.

Would love to see strong alternatives to Kontakt but with NKS support as an industry standard with a standard group coordinating the efforts for it to work well on multiple sample player platforms and instruments (without silly limitations locked in for NI only).

Spitfire and Arturia at least seem to have some tech to open it up for a proper product with third party support.
