Arturia Minilab MK3 seems to cause my Maschine+ to reboot. Anyone else running into this?

Hey there!

So I decided out of the blue to try hooking up my Arturia Minilab MK3 into my Maschine+, but it seems that it causes a boot loop upon doing so. This boot loop persists for as long as I keep my Minilab hooked up.

Has anyone here experienced this issue?

I've verified my firmware is up to date on both the Maschine and the Minilab, Minilab works fine with hooked up to a computer, and I've also tried setting the Minilab to low power mode to see if that offers any improvement. It doesn't.

Anyway just wanted to see if anyone else has run into this before.

    Hey there!

First off, apologies for the delayed followup on this. I did get a ticket in with Arturia, and they are working on getting a Maschine+ to test with.

On my side, I finally got around to getting a powered USB hub to test with as well. Good news is it seems to work just fine. Oddly though, it works even without having power plugged in to the hub, so power doesn't seem to be the issue here. I found that a little confusing.

Anyway, just wanted to let you know.

@ndguardian Would it be possible to do a short video showing the issue so I can show it to our M+ specialists and devs ?

@Jeremy_NI yeah, absolutely! I’ll see about doing that tonight.

@Jeremy_NI - apologies in advance...I'm not particularly good at video but this should demo well enough what I am seeing. If there is anything else you'd like me to test out, any kind of logs you want me to send or whatever, feel free to let me know.

I also didn't show it in the video, but I am running system version 1.4.5.2, Maschine version 2.16.1 (R0) and firmware version 0.1.9

FYI - YouTube says the video is still processing so the link may not work for ~30 minutes while it processes. :P

@ndguardian Thanks for the video, it clearly shows the issue and I can show it around. I'll get back to you when I have feedback from colleagues or devs.

@ndguardian I'm really sorry to get back to you so late after the video. So I assume it's the same for both USB sockets. I've got some feedback from one of our M+ specialists. The issue here is that the Minilab draws too much power. You could try to plug it through a powered USB hub. Can you try this out and let us know how it goes?

Admittedly, I actually haven't tried both ports. Only the one. I'll give that a test and see what I find out.

Regarding a powered hub, I might have one somewhere I can test with. If I do, I'll report back on that as well.

@Jeremy_NI Alright, just confirmed - the second USB port also does lead to the same issue. Also it would seem that I do not seem to have a powered USB hub. I'll probably need to order one if I am to do some testing, which is a bummer but oh well.

Got any powered hub recommendations I should check out? If so I'll order it and test.

Well, there's no model we would recommend in particular. Maybe @D-One would have an idea?

Any Hub should do, try to borrow one from a friend so you don't spend $$ on something that might not solve the issue.

Hum... Well, this is a strange one. Can you try another USB Cable? I noticed you seem to be using a bit of force and wiggling for the connector to go inside the port, that doesn't seem normal, mine goes in fairly easily.

Did you try the MiniLab in User Mode ? Make one with everything turned off (vegas mode, backlight, etc)

Do you have other MIDI devices you can try? Just to establish if all MIDI devices cause this in your M+ or if it's exclusive to the MiniLab.

The MiniLab has a bunch of MIDI ports, one for Arturia Plugs (ALV), another for MCU, etc... check if there is a way to disable those.

@D-One - I did try another USB cable as well as disabling all the backlights, though unfortunately I can't seem to disable the backlights from the boot process. Unfortunately neither of those seem to have an impact.

I am not able to enable or disable the MIDI in from the keyboard as plugging in the keyboard immediately triggers the reboot, so unfortunately I can't really do testing there.

I can confirm all works as expected using an MPK Mini Plus, as well as a LaunchPad Pro MK3. The latter of the two surprises me as I would expect that to consume even more power, but that would be hard to confirm. Err...actually I may have a USB multimeter somewhere. I can verify that.

Alright, got some numbers for you. My USB multimeter only measures volts and amps, but eh I'll take what I can get. I tested this using default configurations, plugged it in and measured. Default lighting and all that on each controller.

    MPK Mini Plus: 4.96 V, 0.14A

    LaunchPad Pro MK3: 4.95V, 0.23A

    Minilab MK3: 4.96V, 0.06A

Based off this, it seems if anything the Minilab uses far less power than the others, so power is almost certainly not the issue. And by proxy, that would also suggest a powered USB hub likely wouldn't fix it. You may be right though in that it's just too many devices as detected by the host. And unfortunately like I mentioned, I don't even get the chance to disable any of them before the boot loop starts. :/

Hi, Minilab 3 (btw: Obviously there is no Minilab MK3) is brand new with a quite young FW 1.0.5.

What does Arturia support say to your issue?

Apologies for the delayed reply. A couple brutal days at work.

Anyway yeah, that is a good point. Should probably ping them as well.

Also, appreciate the correction on the name. You're right. Not sure why my brain was automatically inserting the MK in there. 😄
