Confused about Reaktor startup modes

If I want to create a project that's mainly blocks, but also uses some primary objects, what's the recommended way to do this?

If I start in the 'patch' mode, from the start page, there's no edit button but I get the buttons for port view, ports & wires, etc. If I open the structure view, there are no breadcrumbs at the top of the structure view. Also in this mode, the file browser won't show me any primary or core elements.

If I start in the 'build' mode, there's an edit button, but I don't have buttons for port view etc. The file browser shows me blocks, as well as primary and core. I can see the breadcrumbs in the structure view.

Why is it like this? I find it a bit confusing.

(This is Reaktor 6.4.3 on MacOS Catalina)
