The most memorable film scores are the ones that stick with you long after you've left the cinema, or turned the screen off. But which soundtracks deserve to be remembered as the pinnacles of auditory achievement, fit to be a benchmark for years to come?

We recently asked on Twitter and whittled down the top 10 composers based on the replies:

Now we want you to be the judge.

    John Williams

I think John Williams is hard to beat. A very long career and the scores to some of the biggest movies on the planet.

He's the Pioneer of film scores - the "industry standard". 😄

For me it is by far Phil Glass, strange, he is not listed.

    Ennio Morricone

Out of those Morricone is my favourite - he has created some truly breathtaking and moving scores. Hate Williams, his music is too brash and unimaginative for me.

    Klaus Schulze isn't here also.

The choices are based on the replies we received on social. Surprisingly don't see many Philip Glass mentions there

Philip Glass is not good for the masses. Myself like his music.

Maybe, but he has made many soundracks (50+). OK, some of them were more for minority, but others not.

    Hans Zimmer

Myself own a box: The Complete SONY Recordings. It contains 24 cd's. Wonderful music.

With a thick booklet in three languages: english, french and german.

A little surprising that Danny Elfman didn’t make it to the list.

    Hans Zimmer

I voted for Hans Zimmer but I also like work of Howard Shore (big LOTR fan).

Both composers music always makes me want to rewatch the movies they were featured in.

this list is inaccurate... where is Danny Elfman or Christopher young? Philip Glass or Clint Mansell ?

I really like Bruno Coulais. Very creative. Beautiful, quirky, energetic whatever the vibe of the film is, he captures it so well in a very unformulaic manner.

    Bernard Herrmann

Couldn't believe that Bernard Herman was 0% when I signed in!

Psycho? North by Northwest? Vertigo? The list is long.

    C'mon!

They are classics for a reason.

    Startlingly original even today
